How Often Should You Maintain Your Hair Extensions?

Walking out of the salon with a fresh set of premium hair extensions is an incredible feeling. The blend is flawless, the bonds or wefts are completely invisible, and the volume is exactly what you dreamed of. But hair extensions are not a one-time purchase; they are a commitment.

To keep that initial flawless look, you have to adhere to a strict maintenance schedule. Why? Because your natural hair never stops growing. As your natural hair grows (typically about half an inch per month), it pushes the extension attachments further away from your scalp. If left unchecked, this growth leads to visible bonds, uncomfortable tension, and severe matting that can permanently damage your natural hair.

The timeline for maintenance depends entirely on the installation method you chose. Here is the ultimate guide to exactly how often you need to book your salon touch-ups, and what happens if you wait too long.

Tape-In Extensions: Every 6 to 8 Weeks

Tape-in extensions are beloved for their fast installation and seamless, flat panels. However, because the adhesive panels are typically 1.5 inches wide, they require frequent upkeep.

As your hair grows, these wide panels move down. By week eight, they are often sitting an inch or more away from your scalp. At this distance, the panels can begin to twist, flip upside down when you sleep, or peek through your natural hair when the wind blows. The longer they dangle, the more tension they place on your natural hair follicles.

During a maintenance appointment, your stylist will safely dissolve the medical-grade adhesive, gently remove the wefts, wash and clarify your natural hair, apply fresh double-sided tape to the extensions, and re-install them right back at the root.

Hand-Tied Wefts (Beaded Rows): Every 6 to 8 Weeks

Hand-tied wefts offer massive, undetectable volume. They are sewn onto a foundational row of tiny, silicone-lined beads that are clamped onto your natural hair.

Just like tape-ins, this beaded foundation grows out with your hair. If you push a hand-tied installation past eight weeks, the foundation becomes entirely too loose. A loose track means the heavy weft of hair will start swaying and pulling on your natural hair, which can cause traction alopecia (hair loss from pulling) and severe dreadlocking above the beads.

Your maintenance appointment (often called a "move-up") involves your stylist snipping the thread, unclamping the beads, sliding the foundation back up tightly against your scalp, and securely re-sewing the premium hair back into place.

I-Tip (Microbead) Extensions: Every 6 to 8 Weeks

I-Tip extensions offer great 360-degree movement without the use of heat or adhesives. Each strand is clamped to your natural hair using a tiny copper or aluminum bead.

Because they are individually attached, I-Tips are highly prone to twisting and tangling at the root as they grow out. As the hair naturally sheds daily (which is normal!), those shed hairs get trapped inside the bead. By week eight, the trapped shed hair can begin to dreadlock around the attachment point.

The move-up process for I-Tips is relatively quick. The stylist uses a specialized tool to un-crimp the bead, slides both the bead and the extension strand back up to the top of the hair shaft, and firmly re-crimps it.

K-Tip (Keratin Capsule) Extensions: Every 3 to 5 Months

K-Tips, or capsule extensions, are the exception to the standard salon schedule. Because they are fused to micro-sections of your natural hair using a keratin protein bond, there is no "move-up" appointment.

Instead, K-Tips offer a long-term, set-it-and-forget-it wear cycle. You simply wear them and brush them carefully as they grow out with your natural hair for 3 to 5 months. The exact timeline depends on how fast your hair grows and how fine it is (fine hair requires earlier removal to prevent breakage).

Once the capsules have grown 2 to 3 inches away from your scalp, you must return to the salon for a full removal. The stylist will use a professional solvent to break down the keratin and slide the extensions out. If you invested in high-quality, authentic Slavic hair, the hair can be saved, professionally re-tipped with fresh keratin, and completely re-installed during a new appointment.

Signs You Need to Book an Appointment Sooner

While the timelines above are industry standards, your hair might tell you it is time to visit the salon earlier than expected. Do not wait for your scheduled appointment if you experience any of the following:

  • Visible Matting: If you feel hard lumps or dreadlocks forming above your bonds, beads, or tape, you need professional detangling immediately.

  • Excessive Slipping: If your tape panels feel loose, gummy, or if several K-tip capsules slide out when you brush, your bonds have been compromised by products or oils.

  • Pain or Tension: Extensions should never hurt. If a specific weft or bead is pulling painfully on your scalp, it needs to be removed and repositioned before it rips the natural hair out.

Final Thoughts

The single biggest mistake you can make with hair extensions is trying to stretch the time between maintenance appointments to save money. Skipping a move-up appointment almost always results in severe tangling, damaged attachment points, and broken natural hair—which is far more expensive to fix. By sticking strictly to your recommended schedule and investing in premium quality hair that survives multiple re-installations, you guarantee a flawless, comfortable, and safe extension experience year-round.
